5 Photoshoot Locations in Southern Ontario I’m Dying to Try this Fall

As all photographers do, I spend way to much time admiring other people’s work and checking out the locations and set ups of their photoshoots. Portrait photography is about people, but the right backdrop or location can give you the confidence and piece of mind to really feel comfortable in front of the camera. And if you’re looking to change it up with your next family or couples photoshoot, a unique location could be just the ticket.

With that in mind, let’s get into some of the locations in Southern Ontario I’d love to shoot in this fall! And hey, if you see one you like, give me a shout so we can cross it off the list together.

  1. Selkirk Provincial Park

Despite growing up minutes away from this park and spending the last ten years of my life driving all over Ontario camping, I’ve never made it to Selkirk Provincial Park! I’d love to do a camping shoot here, with photos at the campsite and in areas of the park, such as the beach or walkway. What a great option for the avid camper looking for photos that feel natural and represent them.

  2. Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory

The Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory is one of my favourite places to go to feel like you’ve walked into another ecosystem. The tropical plants and butterflies floating around are such a beautiful vibe, and the bonus is you don’t have to worry about bad weather! It’s like getting a tropical photoshoot with the flight.

  3. Pinery Provincial Park

One of my all time favourite parks, located just outside of Grand Bend. With kilometers of trails and beaches, there’s a ton of options for photos. I have a vision of renting a couple of canoes and following a family or couple on a paddle, all while snapping away to get some unique river photos, or loading up for a beach day and grabbing photos on the iconic wooden walkway and along the shores of Lake Huron.

  4. Ruthven National Historic Site

Ruthven Park is a gorgeous property outside of Cayuga, location on the Grand River (aka the best river, but I acknowledge that’s my own bias). It features a stunning historic mansion and grounds, and is frequently used for weddings and events. If you’re looking for a moody photoshoot, reminiscent of your favourite period drama, this is the spot. I’m envisioning an early morning photoshoot, with the fog rising off the river and the grass still wet with dew, like you’re a Bridgerton pining for your suitor. I think this is the perfect location for a creative engagement shoot.

  5. The Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show

Now I’d be lying to you if I didn’t say that this was my main motivation to make this list, because recently I’ve gotten the idea of fair photos into my head and I can’t get them out! After a lifetime of attending this fair location in Simcoe, I can’t wait to get playful photos in the midway, or shot in the bleachers overlooking the track. And if that sounds good to you, you’re in luck, because this year I’m offering mini sessions at the fair where you can meet me during your visit for a 25 minute photoshoot! Contact me for more details, or follow me on Instagram to get first dibs on dates and times.

And if any of these locations sound good to you, give me a shout! I love working with clients to get them the photos they deserve, and these unique and fun locations are the perfect starting point. They’re also just a small sample of what Southern Ontario has to offer, so if you have another idea, let’s put our heads together and make it happen.
